Sangamon Watercolor Society

The Sangamon Watercolor Society has been offering yearly professional workshops at very reasonable prices. Some of the past instructors have included Mark Mehafey, Mary Jansen, Ratindra Das, Ken Call, Karen Knutson, David Lobenberg, David Becker and Kathleen Conover. We have also offered workshops produced by members.

Cookie will teach “For The Love Of Abstract” and Don will teach “Design & Watercolor Rescue.” Join us from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hoogland Center For The Arts in downtown Springfield. Cost is $100/members ($150 non-members) and includes lunch both days.

Day 1, Cookie will teach her approach to abstract painting and demonstrate steps involved. Then students will work on their own abstract painting with guidance from Cookie. Day 2, Don will discuss elements of design & composition with a demo in the a.m. For the afternoon students need to bring 1 or 2 of their paintings they are struggling or unhappy with. We will look at watercolor rescue ideas and Don will offer hands on CPR suggestions for each artwork that students can apply using their watercolor paints.

Dan Danielson’s fascination with watercolor began at The American Academy of Art, studying under the renowned Irving Shapiro. After an exciting creative director career in advertising, Dan began painting full-time and teaching. His award-winning work has been seen in many watercolor shows and businesses. Dan continues to develop his colorist, regionalism style, while allowing the medium the freedom to reveal it’s unique qualities of brilliance and fluidity. Capturing the medium’s translucent elegance and strength is an ongoing odyssey and a heck of a lot of fun! Dan teaches all levels of students but for our workshop we’ll focus on intermediate to advanced level artist.

The Early Bird cost is $425 if paid in full by February 28, 2025. As of March 1 workshop fee is $475. For non-members the early bird cost is $475.00 and will increase to $525 on March 1.

Group painting occurs throughout the year. Membership includes access to the studio at the Springfield Art Association, September through May on Wednesday mornings. Summer is the time for plein air.  Please refer to the group emails for details.

The SWS group gets together the 4^th Thursday evening of the month except during November and December.
